The Iceland men’s football team may see an unprecedented 4,000 Icelanders cheer them on when they face the Netherlands on 3 September, as Iceland’s UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying campaign continues to capture the country’s imagination.

With six of ten qualifying matches played, Iceland reigns supreme at the top of Group A. Iceland’s first-leg match against the Netherlands resulted in a 2-0 win for the blues.

“This journey has exceeded our wildest and most optimistic dreams and we haven’t even left yet!” says Pétur Orri Gíslason, Head of Tólfan, fan club of the Icelandic national team.

With fans making the trip from Iceland and Icelanders living in other European countries making arrangements to get to Amsterdam, Gíslason estimates that there will certainly be at least 2,800 Icelandic fans cheering their team on – and possibly up to 4,000.

Iceland meet the Netherlands a week today, Thursday 3 September, at the Amsterdam Arena, 8:45pm local time.
