Netflix “available in Iceland soon”

“We’ll be available in Iceland soon,” now reads the website of American on-demand Internet streaming service Netflix.

Many Icelanders have subscribed to the American version of Netflix despite the service being illegal in Iceland. Those potentially interested in the service can enter their e-mail address on the website and receive an alert when Netflix is officially available.

Netflix has done a deal with Samfilm, Iceland’s largest film company and cinema operator, to distribute content. Netflix in Iceland will not be the same as Netflix in the United States – currently used by a good number of Icelanders – as the selection of content will depend on the agreements entered into by Netflix with copyright holders in Iceland.
