A man died and another was injured when a small plane crashed in Barkárdalur valley on Tröllaskagi, west of Akureyri yesterday. 

The plane left Akureyri at two pm yesterday and was supposed to land at Keflavik International Airport at 16.20 pm. At 17.06 the state police was alerted that the plane had not arrived after which an extensive search, conducted by police, rescue services and the National Coastguard, took place. A total of 41 search and rescue teams took part in the search.

Finally, a National Coast Guard helicopter found the plane at 20.30 in the dephts of Barkárdalur and according to Morgunblaðið sources the plane was almost destroyed when it was found. Getting to the wreck proved difficult and a member of the National Coast Guard and a doctor rappelled from the helicopter using ropes down to see to the men inside. 

One of them, a man of foreign extraction whose name has yet to be disclosed, was deceased, but the other was found alive but injured. He was identified as Arngrímur Jóhannsson, former director of Atlanta airways and pilot.  He was transported via helicopter to Akureyri and then by plane to a Reykjavik hospital. 

The plane was a De Havil­l­and Can­ada DHC-2 Bea­ver Mk1, an aircraft which is able to land on water. It is considered to be a very sturdy and reliable plane. An investigation into the crash has begun.
