No decision has yet been taken on what to do with the beached sperm whale found in South Iceland yesterday.

The carcass of the dead animal is 5-6 km away from the nearest farm and therefore unlikely to cause much inconvenience, should it not be removed.

Official procedures in place for cases of beached whales require various bodies to be informed: the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, the Environment Agency of Iceland, the Marine Research Institute, the Veterinary-General and the local Public Health Authority.

The case is currently being examined to ascertain whether it would be better to remove the carcass or allow it to decompose where it is.
