Imagine Peace Tower lit on Friday
Iceland’s Imagine Peace Tower will be illuminated at 8pm on Friday 9 October, the 75th anniversary of the birth of Beatles star, John Lennon.
The ‘tower of light’ is a work by Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, located on the island of Viðey, off the coast of Reykjavik. It is lit each year from Lennon’s birthday, 9 October, to the date of his death, 8 December.
Ono will be laying on free boat transfers to the island between 5:30pm and 7:20pm and there will be free bus services from Reykjavik’s central Hlemmur bus station to the port. Ferries back to the mainland begin at 9pm.
The programme begins on Viðey at 5:30pm, and includes family activities, guided tours and live music. There will also be the chance to see an art exhibition by Yoko’s daughter, Kyoko Ono.
More info is available on the Viðey website here.
The Imagine Peace Tower was officially unveiled on 9 October 2007 and is a symbol for Ono and Lennon’s struggle for world peace. The words “Imagine Peace” are carved onto the structure in 24 languages.
