Leader of the Left-Green Movement Katrín Jakobsdóttir has emerged as the popular choice for Iceland’s new President in a new opinion poll.

The survey, conducted by the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute, asked people who they would like to see as President after the country has gone to the polls on 25 June.

Those responding gave a total of 77 different names, but Jakobsdóttir emerges as the clear favourite, with 21.8%. Her nearest rival, author and executive Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson, scores just 8.8%. Neither has formally announced any intention of running for President at the next elections.

In fact, the only official candidate so far who comes anywhere in the list is footballer-turned-author Þorgrímur Þráinsson, who garners 6.4% support in this poll.

It should be borne in mind when considering these figures that two-thirds of respondents to the survey were undecided.
