Flood of refugee Red Cross donations
Red Cross Iceland has been inundated with donations of items to help welcome and accommodate the group of Syrian refugees shortly expected to arrive in Iceland.
Icelanders have shown “openness of mind and heart”, says Ragnar Þorvarðarson, Deputy Director of the Reykjavik Branch, and came in their droves yesterday with toys, games, prams, furniture and household items for Iceland’s new arrivals.
Between 3 and 7 pm, the Red Cross saw a constant stream of donations, including children who got their parents to bring them in so they could donate their toys.
“This initiative exceeded all expectations,” says Þorvarðarson. “It is wonderful to be able to welcome people arriving with no possessions at all from Lebanese refugee camps straight into fully furnished homes.”
