“Ólafur Ragnar for President 2016!”
A Facebook group has been set up encouraging Iceland’s President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson to stand for a sixth consecutive term in next year’s presidential elections.
Grímsson is already Iceland’s longest serving president and will be celebrating twenty years in the office in 2016.
In the run-up to Iceland’s last presidential elections in 2012, Grímsson initially announced that he would not be running for a fifth term. He subsequently retracted that decision and won the elections with almost 53% of the vote.
“The President is the Iceland’s Head of State,” reads the page description, “and is the only representative elected by the entire nation in direct elections.”
“The office was established in the Constitution of the Icelandic Republic, which entered into force on 17 June 1944. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson is the Republic’s fifth President and has superbly discharged his duties towards people and country.”
Over 600 have liked the page since it was created on Monday.
