Pirate proposes China boycott
In the wake of the – now retracted – controversial Reykjavik City Council to boycott goods produced in Israel, a major Icelandic politician has suggested banning products from China.
“I propose we review Alþingi [the Icelandic Parliament] procurement policy and discuss whether we should be buying products from China,” said leader of the Icelandic Pirate Party (‘Píratar’), Birgitta Jónsdóttir, to fellow MPs today.
Jónsdóttir defended Reykjavik City Council’s right to decide how it arranged its own purchasing and wondered whether the same furore would have been seen if an Icelandic municipality had decided to boycott products from, say, Russia.
