Hate speech phone-in protest

The youth movement of the centre-left Social Democratic Alliance (‘Samfylkingin’) in Iceland – the ‘Young Socialists’ – has organised a protest phone-in to Icelandic radio station Útvarp Saga.

“Forum for hate speech”

On the Facebook page created for the initiative, the Young Socialists condemn the ‘hate speech’ which it says is currently flourishing on the radio station. They claim that hate speech directed at minority groups such as homosexuals and immigrants is a regular feature of the station’s output and is even condoned and stirred up by presenters of certain programmes.

Action planned for this Friday

With this initiative – which has been crowned with the hashtag #OccupySaga – the group is calling upon people to ring in to Útvarp Saga’s free-for-all phone-in (this Friday, 9am-noon) and express themselves in defence of minority groups and their issues.
