Six Progressive Party (‘Framsóknarflokkurinn’) MPs have tabled a draft parliamentary resolution calling on the Minister for Social Affairs and Housing to legislate for the creation of a State representative for elderly people. Similar bills have previously been put before the Icelandic Parliament (‘Alþingi’) but have never been passed.

“The purpose of this proposal is to create the position of State representative responsible for protecting the rights and interests of elderly people. This representative will be expected to: inform elderly people of their legal rights, act upon infringements of these rights, propose reforms to legislation on issues concerning elderly people, and take a leading role in policy discussions on the subject,” the document reads.
