Tryggvi Gunnarsson, ombudsmann for Alþingi (parliament) has published a report on the communications between Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, who resigned in November as Minister of Interior, and Stefán Eiríksson, former head of the Reykjavík police. The report finds that Kristjánsdóttir did not conduct her communications with Eiríksson in a manner that accords with rules of conduct which respect the police force as independent and objective unit. Gunnarsson's report has just been presented at Alþingi.
The report is issued as a result of the Tony Omos case and the leak from the Ministry, a case which lead to the resignation of Kristjánsdóttir. Former head of police, Stefán Eiríksson resigned in the period of investigation into the case.
In the conclusion to the report, Gunnarsson writes that the former Minister of Interior made remarks to and criticised the investigation of a criminal case overstepping the boundaries of factual questions serving to aid the investigation. These communications are therefore incompatible for the position of the Minister as the highest authority governng the police force.
