Extends her leave from politics
Former Interior Minister Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir has decided to take leave from politics until March. She resigned in November as a result of a leaked document from her ministry concerning an asylum seeker. Her former political advisor had previously pleaded guilty to the leak and consequently received eight months suspended jail sentence.
When Kristjánsdóttir resigned she announced her intention to take a leave from her duties as an MP until the beginning of this year. Yesterday she notified the parliamentary group of the conservative Independence Party and members of the party that she intended to extend her leave. „To my opinion I need to look better into this experience and what I've learnt recently about politics, the system of governance, Icelandic society and probably life itself.“
The former mayor of Reykjavík became an MP after the general elections in April 2013 and in the wake of that took on the Ministry of the Interior. She remains the vice-chairman of the Independence Party, a postion she was elected to at the party's national congress in early 2013.
