Gísli Freyr Valdórsson, former political advisor to Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, Minister of the Interior, has received an eight month suspended sentence whilst Kristjánsdóttir retains full support in the Independence Party and is not considering resignation. Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson has declared his full trust and support of Kristjánsdóttir.
Kristjánsdóttir resigned as Minister of Justice when Valdórsson was charged with leaking the information. "It was a breach of law that I had no knowledge of and could not stop or respond to earlier, as I would have liked to. I have already resigned as Minister of Justice. I don't know if people want me to resign a number of times." She added that she trusted Valdórsson who pleaded innocent to the charges. "I repeatedly questioned him and always received the same answers."
The Althingi Ombudsman, Tryggvi Gunnarsson will give an opinion on the interaction between Minister Kristjánsdóttir and former Chief of Police Stefán Eiríksson at the time of investigation but told Morgunbladid that Valdórsson's conviction won't change anything.
Asylum seeker Tony Omos, whose confidential information was leaked to the press may sue the Ministry, according to his lawyer Stefán Karl Kristjánsson. "My client and I are looking into the matter," said Kristjánsson and added that this proved that his client did not receive professional treatment within the Ministry.
