Possible free trade talks between Iceland and Japan were among the topics discussed at a meeting between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries which took place in Tokyo on Monday.
Iceland's FM Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson welcomed steps taken by Japan in recent years in concluding free trade agreements and stressed the importance of a free trade deal with Iceland and other members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Japan already has free trade relations with Switzerland which belongs to EFTA along with Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
The Japanese FM Fumio Kishida was positive towards more cooperation between Iceland and Japan at the meeting according to a press release from the Icelandic Foreign Ministry.
Iceland concluded a free trade agreement with China in 2013 which became active this summer.
