Plan for daycare next spring and reopening of schools next fall
The Independence Party branch in Grindavík passed a resolution at its annual meeting this evening outlining plans to resume daycare services in Grindavík next spring and reopen schools in the fall of 2026.
Eva Lind Matthíasdóttir, chair of the association, told mbl.is she is optimistic that there is strong will within the community to move in that direction.
“I simply can’t believe that the people who have stood at the helm since November 10, 2023, aren’t fundamentally in agreement that we are going to rebuild our town. This is just a step in that direction,” said Matthíasdóttir, referring to the seismic events of that day, when a magma intrusion and graben formation occurred within the town limits of Grindavík.
The Independence Party is the largest party in the governing coalition of the town council, which also includes the Progressive Party and the Young People’s Voice.
“Many factors could affect the plan”
Matthíasdóttir said that education and childcare matters currently fall under the Grindavík Committee, whose legal mandate expires at the next municipal elections.
“We intend to run a full slate in those elections and take part in the campaign.
We’re a group of, I’d say, very capable people who are determined to rebuild this town. Our top priority is Grindavík’s reconstruction.”
She emphasized that the resolution reflects a clear intent to move forward.
“Plans can change, and various factors could affect them. If not in the fall of 2026, then perhaps spring 2027 will look more promising?” said Eva Lind, stressing that the goal is daycare operations next spring and the reopening of schools in fall 2026.
“We need to focus on the key pillars — safety, employment, and housing.”
