In recent weeks, Isavia has received two separate reports of drones flying near Keflavík Airport, both inside and outside the restricted zone.

Guðjón Helgason, Isavia’s communications officer, told mbl.is that he was aware of the two recent incidents in which police were contacted due to drone activity near the airport.

He explained that whenever Isavia receives a tip or spots a drone, the first step is to check whether permission for drone flights has been issued in or around the airport area. If no such permit exists, police are immediately notified. This was done in both of the recent cases.

Police: Reports taken seriously

Ómar Mehmet Annisius, deputy chief superintendent with the Suðurnes Police, confirmed in a written response to mbl.is that the reports had indeed been received.

“The police take all reports of drone flights near or over Keflavík Airport facilities very seriously,” Annisius said.

He noted that police dispatch both personnel and equipment to investigate, alongside gathering additional information. In both cases, however, no drones were ultimately confirmed after the on-site inspections.
