Regional fishing quota must be protected
The government must safeguard the regional fishing quota and ensure that other developments in the fishing industry do not come at its expense. This is stated in a resolution passed at the Westfjords Regional Assembly, held last week.
The assembly emphasized that before any changes are made to the fisheries management system, or before measures are taken that could affect the regional quota, a comprehensive analysis must be carried out to assess the impact of such changes on communities across the country — especially those in the most vulnerable positions.
Regional quota helps sustaining fishing villages
The resolution stresses that the regional quota is one of the government’s key tools for supporting jobs and sustaining communities in fishing towns and villages. The goal is to ensure that part of Iceland’s fisheries resource is used to strengthen and maintain economic activity in settlements that might otherwise struggle to sustain a viable population.
This has been particularly important for the Westfjords compared to other regions of the country.
