Mohamad’s incarceration could cost nearly half a billion ISK
It was recently announced that prisoner Mohamad Th. Jóhannesson [formerly Mohamad Kourani] will be deported once his prison sentence ends in 2028, after he relinquished his claim to international protection.
Guðmundur Ingi Þóroddsson, chairman of Afstaða, the Icelandic prisoners’ association, believes that keeping Mohamad in custody will cost close to 500 million ISK due to the particularly unusual circumstances of the case.
He argues that if alternative measures were taken—such as deporting him earlier—it would save a significant amount of money. Þóroddsson emphasizes that this is an exceptional case and should not necessarily set a precedent for how convicted criminals are handled in the future.
