The Icelandic Meteorological Office has received no reports of landslides in East Iceland overnight. Yesterday, however, several minor slides occurred in stream channels in Seyðisfjörður, Norðfjörður, Eskifjörður, and Fáskrúðsfjörður.

Heavy rainfall hit the Eastfjords yesterday, prompting the Meteorological Office to issue warnings for rising water levels and increased landslide risk.

Marina Stefani, a specialist in avalanche and landslide hazard assessment at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told mbl.is that no landslides had been reported overnight. She added that rainfall had decreased.

“There is still a lot of water flowing through stream channels, but nothing to be concerned about,” Stefani said. Experts at the Meteorological Office will meet this morning to reassess the situation.

No heavy rainfall is forecast for East Iceland today, though showers are expected in the area.

The Meteorological Office urges travelers to exercise caution when moving under steep slopes and to avoid lingering in or below stream channels. It also reminds people that landslides can still occur even after the heaviest rainfall has passed.
