“Tectonic movements causing the quakes”
A fairly strong earthquake swarm has been occurring off Reykjanestá since around 5 a.m. this morning, with the largest quake, magnitude 3.3, measured at 4:48.
Kristín Elísa Guðmundsdóttir, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told mbl.is that 74 earthquakes have been recorded in the area since last night. The largest measured 3.3 in magnitude, while the next largest was 2.8.
“We have not received any reports that the earthquakes were felt in inhabited areas. These quakes are caused by tectonic movements, and such swarms are not uncommon in this location,” Guðmundsdóttir said.
