Rescue teams from Dagrenning in Hvolsvöllur and the Air Rescue Team in Hella were dispatched on the highest priority yesterday morning after reports of a car stuck in Markarfljót, near Gilsá on the Emstrur route. Five people were in the vehicle.

According to a statement from ICE-SAR, the car had gone off course and ended up in Markarfljót, a river carrying considerable water. It became stuck and began drifting downstream.

Bystanders on land did not feel capable of assisting the passengers, and for a time there were serious concerns for their safety.

Not safe to recover the vehicle

Rescue teams rushed to the site with maximum urgency. Upon arrival, a rescue truck was driven into the river, and the passengers were safely evacuated from the car and brought ashore.

At that point, conditions were deemed too dangerous to attempt pulling the car out of the river.

The people were brought safely to land, examined by paramedics on site, and then continued their journey with fellow travelers.
