The ATM stolen from Íslandsbanki’s Þverholt branch some days ago was found near the hot water tanks at Hólmsheiði the day before yesterday, following police investigation.

This was confirmed by Hjördís Sigurbjartsdóttir, deputy chief superintendent, in an interview with mbl.is . The ATM contained 22 million ISK, which Íslandsbanki has now recovered.

“Police investigative work led to the discovery of the ATM. No one pointed it out to us,” Hjördís said. She added that it was a positive outcome, as the goal is always to recover stolen property and determine who is responsible.

She noted that police had received considerable footage and tips from the public, which helped in locating the ATM.

Asked whether there was a tracking device inside the machine, Hjördís said there was not. She confirmed that attempts had been made to break into the ATM but without success.

“Even though the ATM has been found, the case is still under investigation. It is progressing well, but there are still many angles being examined,” she said.

Custody extension under consideration

Two people were held in custody in connection with the case: a woman in her forties and a man in his fifties. The woman was released yesterday, while the man’s custody is set to expire later today.

Police are considering whether to request an extension of his custody, Hjördís said.

According to a report by Vísir yesterday, the man currently in custody has admitted involvement in the Hamraborg case and is among those expected to testify at the main proceedings of the Gufunes case in the South Iceland District Court. Hjördís said she could not comment on that matter.
