Independence Party now largest in Reykjavík
The Independence Party is currently polling as the largest party in Reykjavík’s city council, according to a new Borgarviti survey by Maskína, with 29.2% support. This marks an increase of nearly four percentage points since the last poll in June, when support was roughly the same as in the previous election.
Support for the Social Democratic Alliance (Samfylkingin) has declined, now standing at 25% compared to 29.4% in the last survey. However, the party’s support remains well above its result in the last municipal election, when it received 20.5% of the vote.
The current majority coalition — consisting of the Social Democratic Alliance, the People’s Party, the Socialist Party, the Pirate Party, and the Left-Greens — stands at 46.8% support according to Maskína’s poll.

The Liberal Reform Party (Viðreisn) has gained support and now measures at 14.4%, up from 12.2% in the last poll. This is significantly higher than the party’s result in the previous election, when it received only 5.2% of the vote.
The Pirates have also increased their support since the last survey, polling at 7.4% compared to 5.8% in June. However, this remains well below their performance in the last election, when they earned 11.7%.
Support for other parties is similar to the last poll, ranging between just over 3% and 6%.
The survey was conducted between August 18 and 25, with 1,029 respondents.
