Foreign tourists had to be rescued in Þórsmörk last night after their car became stuck in a river with a strong current.

Rescue workers found the tourists standing on the roof of the vehicle.

The operation was carried out by the Hvolur rescue team from Hvolsvöllur, according to Jón Þór Víglundsson, spokesperson for Landsbjörg, who spoke with mbl.is last night.

Plug-in hybrid cars cause problems

Víglundsson said the car the tourists were driving was a plug-in hybrid rental. Such cars, he noted, are generally not equipped for highland travel or for crossing rivers.

He added that it is concerning that rental companies provide such vehicles to tourists for this purpose.

No one was injured in the incident, Víglundsson said.
