Work underway on bridge over Ölfusá
A temporary bridge has been built out to the island in the Ölfusá River from the east bank, and work is underway on the island so that construction machinery can be moved across the bridge. This will allow preparations to begin for the construction of a 60-meter tower that will be erected in the middle of the island. The tower will become a landmark of the new Ölfusá Bridge and will be visible from afar.
Road construction is also in progress toward the planned road connection east of Selfoss, where a grade-separated interchange will be built with Route 1.
Höskuldur Tryggvason, project manager at the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s construction division, told Morgunblaðið that the foundations for the tower in the middle of the island will be poured, as well as on the banks on both sides. The bridge deck will be slid into place across the river, after which the tower will be erected.
