A closure gate is expected to be installed at Reynisfjara Black Beach today. The gate will be used when the red warning light is on at the beach’s warning signs. The risk assessment for the beach has also been revised, meaning the red light will now be activated more frequently.

This is according to Ragnhildur Hrund Jónsdóttir, one of the landowners at Reynisfjara, speaking to mbl.is.

A new warning sign was installed at Reynisfjara Black Beach on Saturday after the previous one blew away in a storm last spring.

According to Jónsdóttir, more signs are expected to be installed at the beach, as part of a complete renewal of all informational signage in the area.

Access to basalt columns and Hálsanefshellir cave prohibited

She says the new closure gate will almost certainly be installed today, and landowners will be responsible for closing it when the red light is on.

The gate will be placed on the walking path leading down to the beach ridge, which means it will be prohibited to go down to the basalt columns or into Hálsanefshellir cave.

Visitors will still be able to stand on the viewing platform near the warning signs.

In addition, the danger threshold in the wave forecast system has been adjusted so that the red light will now turn on earlier and therefore be on more often than before, as mentioned.

Jónsdóttir says that decision was made during a recent safety meeting.
