Hikers rescued from precarious spot in Nesskriður
Search and rescue teams from Eyjafjörður and Siglufjörður were called out last night after four hikers became trapped in a difficult position in the Nesskriður area near Siglufjörður.
The hikers were unharmed, though they had been walking for several hours and were beginning to feel fatigued and cold, according to a statement from ICE-SAR (Landsbjörg).
Rescuers were transported aboard the rescue vessel Sigurvin out into Siglufjörður, and several inflatable boats were used to shuttle rescue personnel from Sigurvin to shore.
Operation went smoothly
“Shortly after Sigurvin reached the fjord, the hikers were spotted. Rescue personnel were brought ashore in inflatable boats and climbed the slope to reach them. Once the rescuers had assessed the situation, it was decided to guide the hikers a bit farther north — back in the direction they had come — where a safer descent route was available,” the statement reads.
It adds that the operation went smoothly, and for everyone's safety, ropes and safety anchors were set up for the descent down to the shore.
The hikers were then transported back to Siglufjörður aboard Sigurvin.
