Eruption activity has slowed down
Volcanic activity at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row has slowed since yesterday morning but has remained relatively stable since then.
In a statement from the Natural Hazards Monitoring team at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, it is noted that the eruption continues from a single crater, with lava flowing east and southeast, spreading across the lava field within 1 km of the crater. Movement at the outer edges of the lava is minimal or slow.
Today, gas pollution is expected to drift northwest and west, and it may be detected in the northwestern and western parts of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Winds are forecast to shift to the north in the evening, at which point pollution may be noticed in Grindavík. Little to no volcanic haze has been measured in the country overnight.
