Fire on board ship in Skutulsfjörður
No one was injured on board the dredger Álfsnes when a fire broke out in the engine room, causing a power failure in Pollurinn near Ísafjörður late last night.
The crew of Álfsnes contacted the Icelandic Coast Guard’s command center around 11 p.m. yesterday evening, reporting that there was a fire in the engine room and the vessel was without power in Pollurinn, inside Ísafjörður.
Assistance was requested to bring the ship to shore. Coast Guard operators immediately dispatched the Landsbjörg rescue vessel from Ísafjörður, the town’s fire brigade, and the harbor tug Sturla Halldórsson to assist. The Coast Guard helicopter crew in Reykjavík was also placed on standby.
According to a statement from the Coast Guard, all five crew members were unharmed. Ten minutes after the initial alert, the captain of Álfsnes reported that the fire may have already been extinguished.
Shortly afterward, the rescue vessel Gísli Jóns reached Álfsnes, and just before midnight, efforts were underway to bring the dredger safely to the dock in Ísafjörður.
