Earthquake felt in the Capital area
An earthquake measuring 3.5 struck west of Kleifarvatn just before 3 a.m. last night and was felt in the capital area.
According to a statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s Natural Hazards Watch, the quake occurred at 2:55 a.m. at a depth of 5 kilometers near Móhálsadalur, west of Kleifarvatn.
The main tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks.
The statement notes that earthquakes of this magnitude are common in the Kleifarvatn area, with the last similar event in Móhálsadalur occurring on June 18, measuring 3.4.
