"This is unequivocally illegal"
Daníel Freyr Sigurbjarnarson, regional specialist at the Environment Agency of Iceland, is urging motorcyclists to stop driving off-road.
A photo shared yesterday in the Facebook group Bakland Ferðaþjónustunnar shows severe damage to land near Rauðuskál, caused by motorcycle activity.
"This area is unfortunately a hotspot for off-road driving. There’s a lot of illegal use of motocross bikes both near Rauðuskál and the surrounding areas," says Sigurbjarnarson.
Unequivocally banned
He emphasizes that this activity is strictly prohibited.
“This is unequivocally illegal. There are no roads in the vicinity, so this is off-road driving—whether it’s motocross bikes or ATVs.”
Sigurbjarnarson stresses the need to put an end to this, adding that designated areas exist for this type of activity—but this is not one of them.
“I appeal to motorcyclists: please stop doing this. In the Hekla area, the damage is clearly visible. There are few places as badly affected as the sands and lava fields around Hekla.”
