Minister of Economic Affairs Hanna Katrín Friðriksson’s bill to increase fishing fees has been passed by Alþingi (the Icelandic Parliament).

Members of Parliament voted on the bill just now.

The bill has been highly controversial. Last Friday, the governing majority approved a proposal from the Speaker of Parliament to invoke Article 71 of the Parliamentary Procedure Act—commonly known as the "nuclear option"—to halt the second reading of the bill.

The bill was passed with the support of government MPs, while not a single opposition MP voted in favor.

No bill has been debated more extensively in Alþingi since the parliament was unified into a single chamber in 1991.
