Steinþór Jónsson, hotel manager at Hotel Keflavík, is preparing for a major expansion project at the hotel. The plan involves adding around 100 rooms, bringing the total to 177 rooms between the hotel and a nearby guesthouse.

At the same time, a new travel service center and residential apartments are set to be developed in Keflavík under the working title KEF Center.

“We are open to co-investors. The future plans for this area won’t cost less than 4–5 billion ISK,” says Steinþór, who also intends to build luxury accommodation and a reception house in the Vatnsnes House.

Jónsson opened the wellness center KEF Spa & Fitness last autumn, a project that cost nearly one billion ISK.

“In the early weeks last year, we were still testing things and making final adjustments, as you do. But already this year – I’d say since March – we’ve been fully booked on key days: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,” Jónsson explains. “It’s primarily Icelanders coming in groups and couples. Sewing clubs and sports teams have been particularly visible, and we’ve hosted bachelorette parties and other events.”

An in-depth interview with Jónsson appears in today’s center spread of the Business section of Morgunblaðið.
