Icelandair is putting a new Airbus flight simulator into operation, bringing the total number of simulators used by the airline in Iceland to three—all located in Hafnarfjörður.

According to Ásgeir Bjarni Lárusson, Managing Director of CAE Icelandair Flight Training (a subsidiary of Icelandair), the addition marks an important step in the development and optimization of pilot training processes.

These types of simulators are used for type rating training—a mandatory program pilots must complete before being allowed to operate a specific type of aircraft. Each pilot is required to complete at least 40 hours in the simulator to obtain certification for the relevant aircraft type. In addition, pilots must undergo recurrent training four times a year, with each session lasting four hours.

Until now, Airbus simulator training had to be conducted abroad, but the new simulator will significantly reduce costs and streamline operations for the airline.
