Plans are underway to begin laying two new power cables to the Westman Islands around the end of the month. A specialized cable-laying vessel, owned by the Norwegian company Seaworks, is expected to arrive in Iceland by midweek to carry out the operation.

This was confirmed by Einar Snorri Einarsson, Director of the CEO’s Office at Landsnet, in a statement to Morgunblaðið.

The new cables, designated as the Westman Islands Cables 4 and 5, will supplement the existing electricity transmission lines to the islands. The original cable, Westman Islands 1, has become outdated and has limited capacity. Cable 2 is no longer in use. Cable 3, installed 12 years ago, has experienced two failures—the most recent in 2022—but has operated without issue since.
