Dozens of pilot whales stranded in Ólafsfjörður

Dozens of pilot whales were stranded in Ólafsfjörður earlier today.

According to Hinrik Wöhler, deputy spokesperson for ICE-SAR (Icelandic Search and Rescue), rescue teams from the Tröllaskagi region and Akureyri were called out to assist. Efforts were made throughout the day to refloat the whales and guide them back out to sea.

Wöhler stated that a considerable number of whales were involved, but that the rescue operation was progressing well.

By around 7 p.m., the search and rescue teams had successfully moved the whales from the shoreline and back into open water.
