An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was recorded near Grjótárvatn in Mýrar at 6:05 p.m. today.

According to a statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, this is one of the strongest quakes measured in the area since seismic activity began there in 2021.

Similar quakes of the same magnitude were recorded on April 15 and May 8 of this year and were felt in nearby areas, the statement adds.

Seismic activity in the Mt Ljósufjöll volcanic system has been on the rise since 2021. Last year, experts at the Meteorological Office decided to increase monitoring of the area. A new seismic station was installed in Hítardalur last autumn, closer to the epicenter of the recent quakes.

The activity is primarily concentrated around three lakes: Grjótárvatn, Háleiksvatn, and Langavatn.
