Search underway for missing hiker
Search and rescue teams from the capital area were dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. last night to search for a missing hiker near Mount Esja, according to Hinrik Wöhler, acting spokesperson for ICE-SAR, in a statement to mbl.is .
A Coast Guard helicopter has also joined the operation, which is still ongoing. Authorities have not released further information at this time.
No signs yet of missing hiker
As of this morning, the search had yet to yield results. Rescue teams from the capital region, along with the Coast Guard helicopter, continued searching through the night and into the early morning hours.
According to Wöhler, the missing person is believed to have been hiking alone. No additional details about the individual have been released.
Around 10 a.m. this morning, search teams from across the southwest of Iceland were called in to assist. The operation is focused on Mount Esja and the surrounding area.
