Fatal accident at Brúará River

Rescue teams in South Iceland and a swift water rescue unit from the capital area were called out following an accident in or near the Brúará river yesterday. A Coast Guard helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.

A report was received by the South Iceland Police at 4:15 PM yesterday, stating that an individual had fallen into the Brúará river near Hlauptungufoss Waterfall. It was later confirmed that the individual had been found, and by the evening it was announced that the person was a foreign tourist. However, no further details were provided at that time regarding the individual’s nationality or the circumstances of the incident.

Early this morning, police confirmed that the tourist was a woman in her thirties and that she was found deceased. An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the accident.
