A man found dead in the sea off Örfirisey yesterday afternoon is believed to be the same individual who had been the subject of an extensive search since Thursday.

According to a statement from the Capital Area Police, the man is thought to have exhausted himself while swimming. Authorities believe they have identified him, confirming that he is not a foreign tourist.

The man was reported missing around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, prompting a large-scale search involving multiple emergency services, including police, rescue teams, and the Coast Guard.

Initial efforts continued until 10 p.m. on Thursday evening, when the search was temporarily suspended. It resumed at 1:30 a.m. on Friday after rescue teams and police reviewed the situation and coordinated a new search plan.

The operation concluded when the man’s body was discovered in the sea later that day.

Police have not released the man's identity, but investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The search resumed near Fiskislóð at around 2 pm yesterday.
