Search for swimmer at Fiskislóð resumes at noon
The search for a man believed to have entered the sea at Fiskislóð in Reykjavík is set to resume at noon today, following its suspension at 10 p.m. last night.
Kristján Helgi Þráinsson, assistant chief of police in the operations department of the capital area police, confirmed this to mbl.is. He stated that police would first hold a coordination meeting with rescue teams to assess the situation before resuming the operation.
The search initially began shortly before 5 p.m. yesterday, after eyewitnesses reported seeing a swimmer in the water near Fiskislóð. A large number of emergency responders took part in the effort, but the search was unsuccessful before nightfall.
“We're meeting at the police station now,” said Kristján Helgi. “We'll then meet with Landsbjörg for a follow-up and plan to restart the search shortly after noon, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions.”
When asked whether it had been confirmed that someone had entered the sea, Kristján Helgi responded:
“We're working on that. I can't say for certain, but it appears to be the case.”
The search effort has involved police officers, firefighters, members of local rescue teams, divers from the special forces unit, and a Coast Guard helicopter.
