According to the Icelandic Coast Guard, the small aircraft that made an emergency landing on Suðurlandsvegur last night is the same plane that authorities were searching for yesterday, following the declaration of an uncertainty phase. This was confirmed by Ásgeir Erlendsson, spokesperson for the Coast Guard, in an interview with mbl.is.
The plane lost engine power shortly before midnight and was forced to land on Suðurlandsvegur, just east of Hólmsheiði, resulting in the closure of one lane of the road for an extended period.
The pilot, who had his dog with him, was unharmed in the incident. Neither the pilot nor the dog suffered any injuries during the emergency landing.
Flight Originated in Greenland
The aircraft had departed from Narsarsuaq in Greenland and was en route to Keflavík. However, the pilot had not filed the required departure report. The plane did not appear on radar and failed to respond to calls from Reykjavík air traffic control.
As a result, the Coast Guard initiated a search, deploying a patrol plane and two members of a rescue team. However, just before takeoff, contact was re-established with the pilot, and the aircraft's signals began appearing on the NATO control center systems at Keflavík Airport.
