The weather forecast for the weekend is looking very promising, with mild and pleasant conditions expected across the country through Tuesday.

A new May temperature record was set yesterday, with Egilsstaðir Airport recording a high of 26.6°C. The previous record of 25.6°C was set in Vopnafjörður in May 1992.

Meteorologist Katrín Agla Tómasdóttir from the Icelandic Meteorological Office says she would be surprised if the new record is broken today, as southerly winds are weaker than they were yesterday. She notes that sea breezes could moderate temperatures, especially near the coast, but does not rule out the possibility of another record-breaking day this weekend.

“It will remain very warm throughout the weekend, although it’s hard to say whether we’ll break the new record,” Tómasdóttir told mbl.is. “The forecast is excellent for almost the entire country. However, foggy conditions could appear along the south and east coasts, bringing cooler temperatures to those areas.”

Capital area could reach 21°C

According to Tómasdóttir, the weekend will bring light southerly winds, clear skies, and warm weather across all regions. On Sunday, the capital area is expected to enjoy partly cloudy skies with temperatures reaching up to 21°C.

Looking ahead, Tómasdóttir notes that a change in weather could arrive by Wednesday, with forecasts predicting increasing southeasterly winds and some moisture in the west. This may lead to cooler temperatures south of the highlands, although the northeast is expected to remain warm, with temperatures hovering around or above 20°C.
