Excavator overturns on Tjörnin lake islet
It didn't get any better than when the contractor company Sólgarður's mini excavator fell to the side while working on the islet in Tjörnin lake today, but everything went well, says Sölvi Steinar Jónsson, who is responsible for refreshing the islet. mbl.is/Árni Sæberg
An excavator overturned on the islet in Tjörnin lake in Reykjavík during restoration work, but no injuries or damage were reported.
“The machine simply tipped over. It was standing on soft sand, and it was just human error,” said Sölvi Steinar Jónsson, owner of the construction company Sólgarður, which is overseeing the ongoing restoration of the old mill islet.
According to Jónsson, a mini excavator being used by his crew fell onto its side but was not damaged in the incident.
Reviving the Islet
“We began the restoration this winter,” Jónsson explained. “Right now, we’re placing rocks around the islet, and later this winter we’ll replace the soil. The goal is to prepare the area so birds can nest there. It will be surrounded by rock, then covered with grass, and we’ll plant two or three trees.”
Sólgarður’s project breathes new life into the small islet—an often-overlooked part of Tjörnin lake that many Reykjavík residents pass by daily, though few have ever set foot on it.
