No reason to resign, says former special prosecutor amid data theft probe

District Prosecutor Ólafur Þór Hauksson says he sees no reason to resign following revelations of extensive data theft from the now-defunct Office of the Special Prosecutor, which he once led. He maintains that all investigative methods, including wiretapping, were legally authorized and backed by court orders.
"It is not possible to obtain wiretapping unless you have a court order. This goes between institutions and there is an explicit requirement for a court order and wiretapping is never carried out unless there is a court order," Hauksson says in an interview with Morgunblaðið.
The case concerns Jón Óttar Ólafsson and Guðmundur Haukur Gunnarsson, former employees accused of illegally taking data and using it for their consulting firm, PPP. Though charges of confidentiality breaches were brought in 2012, the Attorney General dropped the case and did not pursue other allegations of unlawful surveillance.
In response to the scandal, State Prosecutor Sigríður J. Friðjónsdóttir has assigned the South Iceland Police to investigate. Additionally, the Police Supervision Committee and the Constitutional and Oversight Committee of the Althing are reviewing the matter.
Hauksson says he will wait for the outcome of these investigations before considering any further action.
