Warning: Ice and slush expected on mountain roads tonight
Drivers are advised to exercise caution as weather conditions are set to deteriorate significantly late tonight, bringing snow, sleet, and icy patches to mountain roads across the country.
According to the Icelandic Road Administration's meteorologist, temperatures will drop sharply with the arrival of a southwesterly wind. Snow is expected on major mountain routes including Hellisheiði, Holtavörðuheiði, Steingrímsfjarðarheiði, and Öxnadalsheiði overnight.
Slippery conditions ahead
Sleet is forecast across much of western Iceland tomorrow, accompanied by strong winds. These conditions are likely to cause slush and ice formation on mountain roads, particularly in inland areas in the north and as far west as the fjords. Drivers are strongly advised to prepare for winter road conditions, even in May.
Yellow weather warnings in effect
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued yellow weather alerts for Faxaflói, Breiðafjörður, and the Westfjords, beginning at midnight and lasting through the day. Winds from the southwest are expected to reach 8–15 m/s, with intermittent sleet and snow flurries reducing visibility.
The agency emphasizes that poor visibility, icy patches, and slushy conditions will make travel hazardous, especially on elevated routes. Travelers should check road conditions and weather updates regularly and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter driving.
