Tourists visiting Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík are now being met with warnings about pickpockets, following a recent increase in thefts inside the church. Churchwarden Grétar Einarsson confirmed that signs have been placed at the entrance after at least three incidents were reported to police in recent days.

"We are such a popular tourist destination that we decided to put up warnings at the church," said Einarsson. He added that the initiative came from the church itself, not from law enforcement.

“Sad but necessary”

"This is sad, and we would rather not have such a sign displayed. But we feel it’s better to warn people than remain silent," Einarsson said. He explained that the pickpockets appear indistinguishable from regular tourists, making them difficult to identify.

Though the church has surveillance cameras, crowded conditions inside make it challenging to monitor all activity, especially when people are focused on viewing the church interior.

National rise in pickpocketing

The Icelandic Tourist Board has issued a broader warning to tourism providers across the country, noting a rise in pickpocketing incidents at Iceland’s most visited attractions.

“We have received tips that groups of pickpockets are operating in major tourist destinations across Iceland. Some tourists have lost substantial amounts of money in recent weeks,” said the board in an official statement.

Tourism operators are now being encouraged to warn visitors and advise them on how to secure their valuables.

Tips to protect against pickpockets

The Icelandic Tourist Board offers the following advice:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places.
  • Lock all bags and purses, and carry them in front of you.
  • Do not keep all your money in one place; consider keeping some hidden under your clothing.
  • Avoid storing valuables in outer jacket pockets.
  • Keep copies of important personal documents.
  • Report suspicious activity to the police or park rangers.
  • Always report thefts, even if it takes time away from your travel plans.
