Record-breaking attendance at 49th Donald Duck Games
The 49th Donald Duck Games (Andrésar andar leikarnir) in skiing took place yesterday in Hlíðarfjall, near Akureyri, drawing a record number of participants despite a challenging winter.
This year’s event saw 930 children registered to compete — the highest attendance in the history of the games. Despite an unusually mild winter marked by little snowfall and persistent southerly winds across much of the country, the enthusiasm for the games has remained strong.
Preparations have been underway since last autumn, and organizers are optimistic that this year’s games will be particularly memorable. “The Donald Duck Games are the highlight of the ski season for many children, and they’re always excited to come to Akureyri and take part,” said one of the event coordinators.
Conditions in Hlíðarfjall have held up impressively well, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the mountain’s staff. Workers have spent recent weeks moving and compacting snow to ensure safe and enjoyable conditions for all competitors.
With a festive atmosphere and record turnout, the 49th Donald Duck Games will be one of the most successful yet.
