Crowds gather in Reykjavík to mourn Pope Francis
A large crowd filled Landakotskirkja Catholic Church in Reykjavík on Monday night to honor the memory of Pope Francis, who passed away that morning at the age of 88.
The memorial mass was led by Bishop Dávid Tencer of the Catholic Church in Iceland, joined by clergy from the Reykjavík Diocese. Together, they offered prayers for the late Pope’s soul in a solemn and heartfelt service.
Among those in attendance were Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Bishop Guðrún Karls Helgudóttir of the National Church, and President Halla Tómasdóttir, accompanied by her husband Björn Skúlason.
President Tómasdóttir is set to attend Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican this coming Saturday, representing the people of Iceland as the world bids farewell to a beloved spiritual leader.
